General Motors will revamp a Kentucky factory to produce a new version of the iconic Chevrolet Corvette sports car that will look “completely different” from the current version, the automaker said on Wednesday. The automaker will invest $131 million in the Bowling Green, Ky. factory

Without providing specifics, Chevrolet said the plant will continue to build the current-generation model for “at least the next two model years.” This implies the redesigned Corvette won’t be launched until the 2014 model year - at the earliest.

Having made upgrades to the 2012 model, General Motors will focus on re-tooling the plant, while also adding 250 workers to supplement the 400 UAW employees already building America’s sports car.

Corvettes had been made at Bowling Green since 1981. All versions of the car are assembled there including hardtops, convertibles and the high-performance Z06 and ZR1 versions.

While most cars are thoroughly redesigned about every five years to keep up with changing consumer tastes and competitors’ improvements, high-cost niche products like the Corvette tend to go much longer between revisions. The sixth-generation Corvette was introduced in 2005.
GM spent about $39 million on the plant when it changed over to the C6 Corvette in 2005–about one-third the amount it is spending for the changeover to the C7

Corvette Stingray Concept

The Corvette Stingray Concept was featured in Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen and then unveiled at the 2009 Chicago Auto Show. However that was a coupe model which is like the vehicle spotted in Beverly Hills recently. Of course, Beverly Hills had the chance to see a Speedster version of the 50th Anniversary Corvette Stingray Concept parked in the area. And since GM has said absolutely nothing about a Speedster version we can only assume that this is the work of a tuning firm.

Compared to the standard Stingray concept, the Speedster version features - besides missing the top - a different hood with dual openings in the front, no LED vertical headlights – a more conventional lighting system appears tucked into the front recesses, different wheels, and a different front grille.

However, there might be another explanation for this strange sight. We have to consider the fact that since Transformers 3 is in the works, it might be possible the Speedster version was specially developed for the movie. Or could this be the Don’t worry, we’re kidding

Caught Testing: 2014 Chevrolet Corvette - Spy Shots

The 2014 has been spotted on public roads, rolling in a small convoy of coupe and convertible test mules. At first glance, these might appear like mildly reworked versions of the current (C6) generation Vette. But more and more details are emerging about top performance model, and some fairly major changes look to be coming to the next generation.

For starters, a 7-speed manual transmission will be offered for the first time. This should allow Corvette engineers to shorten the lower gear ratios for quicker acceleration, while also improving highway fuel economy thanks to the extra cog. The current Corvette already manages a respectable 26 mpg during highway driving. Don’t be surprised if the C7 engineering team is gunning for 30 mpg, or more.

Fact and Fiction

A more advanced range of V-8 engines, featuring direct injection and slightly reduced displacement, will maintain sports car levels of performance while helping to boost fuel efficiency. We wouldn’t count on Chevy offering any electric powertrains or hybrid hardware in the Corvette, at least for now. However, there might be some surprises when the car debuts in late 2013 (as a 2014 model).

The coupe test mule, spotted by our photographers, has a centrally mounted quad exhaust setup peeking out from beneath the car’s rear fascia. In the convertible test cars, all four of these pipes are open. Yet the coupe is sporting some curious-looking caps on the outer pipes. Is this simple trickery on the part of the engineering team, or is something more going on here?

The rumor mill is already swirling with talk of everything from a smaller turbocharged V-8 to an optional split rear window—like the one used on the 1963 Sting Ray. One item that is certain to receive a major improvement is the Corvette cabin, which has long lagged behind the competition in terms of fit and finish. The C7’s longer wheelbase could also free up additional space for occupants and cargo.

National Corvette Museum Announces 2014 Caravan National Chai

represented, traveling from every continental United State and even a few foreign countries to gather in the Home of the Corvette. 2014 will bring the 5th National Corvette Caravan and will mark the 20th Anniversary of the National Corvette Museum. Leading the spectacle is Paul Mariano of Huntersville, NC, a 20-year Museum member who is not only a lifetime member of the Museum but also a founding member.

Paul is currently the ambassador to the Museum for the Queen City Corvette Club in Charlotte, NC, and previously was the ambassador for the Corvette Club of Santa Barbara, CA. He is a member of the NCRS and was a participant of the Southern California caravan in 1999, co-captain of the Southern California caravan in 2003, and sponsorship/advertising chairman for the 2009 North Carolina / South Carolina / Virginia caravan.

“When Roc Linkov, NCM Events Manager, asked if I would do it, I did have a little trepidation,” said Paul. “But as when I agreed to take the Southern California caravan at the last minute, I thought if not me then who? I have such a deep love affair with the museum that I want to contribute as much as I can, wherever I can. Without the great help that my wife Barbara provides, I could not manage to take on any of these caravan tasks. I just hope I can provide the service that everyone has entrusted to me.”

Paul is an avid supporter of the National Corvette Museum, the Corvette Race Team and the Corvette lifestyle. He currently owns a 1967 big block coupe Corvette and a 2007 Z06.

The 5th National Corvette Caravan will take place the first week of September, 2014. Regional caravans will form and join other caravans as they travel across the United States to gather in Bowling Green, Kentucky for four days of festivities at the National Corvette Museum. “A national caravan such as this requires years of planning and coordinating and the Museum is fortunate to have a volunteer like Paul to take on this monumental task,” stated National Corvette Museum Executive Director, Wendell Strode.

The Museum is located at I-65, exit 28 in South Central Kentucky and is open daily, 8am to 5pm Central Time
